Hello friends, I named this blog after my favorite Iron and Wine song but the more and more I thought about this name the more confident I became that it was well chosen. The resurrection fern (polypodium polypodiodes) is an airplant that attaches itself to other plants and gets nutrients from the air, water and outer surface of the bark of trees. It can survive long periods of drought by curling up and appearing dead but then it only takes a little sprinkle of water and it unfurls and comes alive. Amazing enough these plants can live 100 years without water and resurrect with only one soaking. They even took one of these little plants on a space shuttle mission to see if it could resurrect at zero gravity and guess what , it did. Another thing I love about this plant is that it is often found with two of my favorite things spanish moss and white pine trees.
Now you might be saying thanks for the botany lesson but what does that have to do with the author of this blog. A year ago I was feeling dried up at least creatively speaking and over the past few months I have rediscovered my joy in making articles with my hands. It didn't happen with one soak but slowly I was watered and nourished by discovering the world of blog, etsy and flickr. My family hastened the process by accepting and loving my creations. A blog friend of mine who I feel is very wise for her young age said "what you are happiest doing at five is what you will be happiest doing your entire life." I read this just over 6 months ago and have never forgotten it. When I was five I was teaching myself how to sew, knit and embroider. I started making rag dolls and selling them to my sister's friends. I embroidered jean jackets for some rock band members that knew my brother's girlfriend . I collected things, mainly rocks and fossils . Life kind of took over and I choose head over heart in choosing my path as far as my education and chosen profession at least. I have no regrets and it all turned out quite amazingly but now I find myself returning to my first love and restoring my creativity. In this way as I approach the middle section of my life I may finally achieve balance.
My daughter Bekki, painted this for me as a christmas gift. At that time she didn't know I had chosen to start a blog or what the name would be. This painting is her interpretation of Sam Beam's lyrics for the song Resurrection Fern.
This blog is my little love fern . Here I will share my life, thoughts, experience and the fruits of my labor. I finish this my first post with a part of a conversation from a movie my daughter and I enjoyed , How to lose a guy in 10 days. Andie: Our love fern! You let it die!!!! Ben: No honey, it's just sleeping. Well Ben its not sleeping any longer ( I added that last bit).
special thanks to Elsita Mora and to my daughter Deborah. Thanks for being so helpful and patient with me.
