Making a Mushroom Stool : An Upcycling Tutorial

I have trained my children from a very young age to seek and rescue items from local thrift stores. My eldest daughter called me on the phone on day to tell me she had found a retro looking metal based stool that was certain looked very mushroom like. When I finally saw it I agreed but the cushions fabric was stained and torn in a few spots. We decided to spruce it up and turn it into a toadstool. It was neat how the cushion just lifted out . Instead of trying to remove the million staples that were used to fasten the fabric I just cut it off and then replaced it with a piece of red wool coat fabric that I had found at Value Village a few years ago. I used thumb tacks to fasten it down. I then replaced the cushion on the metal base and it fit perfectly. I took some natural off white merino roving and my clover needle felting tool and felted some white circles about one inch in diameter on the surface of the red wool. The process went very quickly because of the foam underneath . I made a total of eleven white spots because that is my favorite number and my daughter who found this treasure was born on the 11th. The entire process took about an hour and the end result makes me smile every time I glance at it. Oh look someone else likes it as well. I am going to borrow it for my sewing area until my daughter comes to claim it. I am really looking forward to the weekend. The leaves are turning color on more and more trees and I am looking forward to a special someone returning home tomorrow from France.
