when a healing friend arrives for a winter visit

Of course one hast to create the perfect winter accommodations for your newest friend sent from Nanou. So you take a walk around the neighbourhood for inspiration and what do you see. An amazing igloo, a quinzee and a inukshuk. All within a 30 minute walk from my home.

 The quinzee was built by Deborah's outdoor education classmates and can house 14 students!

We had loads of snow but the temperatures were rising so we settled on a porch table quinzee, protected from the rain and avalanches from our roof snow.

Saimanaq enlisted the help of a snow man.

The tree ghost helped the healing friend find her way to the quinzee.

 It didn't take long for a very strong connection to form.

after a long trip from France they decided to call it a day. They said that they were going to go to sleep but hours later I think I still hear them talking. I guess they had a great many things to catch up on.

They didn't even see the hockey game ( way to go Canada!!) or the closing ceremonies of the most awesome winter olympics ever.

Fourth embroidered piece in the watching the olympics series almost completed. Any one want to guess what significance the number has?

Here is a little personal update to this post from my daughter Rebekah who saw this first hand last summer.

hi mom,

i thought you might like to include some of these pictures in your caribou/migration post. the one where you can see all the tracks from the migration is neat, the whole landscape looked like that, it was incredible to think of how many animals must have made those tracks. we missed the actual herd though. these were taken from the helicopter at Cape Henrietta Maria, which is the western meeting point of James Bay and Hudson Bay. sorry i don't have a better shot of some caribou!

good things come in threes

So far three north american aboriginal and stone inspired pieces stitches on organic cotton. You can see them in more detail from these pictures. I know I have other things I need to work on but I am also pretty sure I am not quite finished with this concept. 

I have a few ideas as to where these patches will end up. I would love to hear your ideas.

tukilik : that which has meaning

mole : protector from the downward direction ( from the ground)

inukshuk : likeness of a person , markers for migratory routes of the caribou and other animals and used for navigation

aurora borealis : known as the northern lights and gathering its name from Aurora the roman goddess of the dawn and Boreas the greek name for the north wind. I have seen this colorful dance of the spirits three times in my life thus far.

These four concepts came together in the small round space contained within my embroidery hoop two nights ago. 

This one was just so much fun to create while watching the olympics. 

      

I knew it was your birthday

so I baked you a stone cake Nanou. It comes complete with it's very own stone candle. Of course fern and edgar joined in the celebration. I think everyone will join me in wishing you the most amazing birthday ever!!!! 

Make as many wishes as you want and blow out the candle. phewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Saimanaq joined me on the wonderful sunday morning walk yesterday. it was so peaceful since it is a very newly cut trail on the edge of our town and not well known yet. 

Notice how she brought along her mukluks just incase her stone toes got cold. I think the extra set were for me but only my little toe fit into them.

Isn't that sparkly snow just amazing?

      

looking for spring

Absolutely beautiful, warm, sunny day here in Ontario today so I just had to tear myself away from making and the olympics to go for a very long walk. The ice is breaking up and the combination of the birds rejoicing and the brook babbling was music to my ears. I snapped a few pictures and gathered a few snippets. Now back to crocheting and stitching while watching the new olympic event ski cross. 

Doesn't snow make a perfect canvas?
