A lovely few hours of my birthday weekend in the Boston area was spent at the Museum of Fine Arts and mostly in the new Art of the Americas wing. I didn't even know the exhibit of Chihuly's blown glass work was on. It seemed so fitting to be viewing his colorful gardens of silica on my mom's birthday. He is compared to a modern Louis Comfort Tiffany, an artist whose work mom had a very close relationship with.
Chihuly traces his fascination with glass to his childhood , "I remember taking walks on the beach as a child and picking up pieces of glass in the sand. And I remember being fascinated by stained glass in church."
"But I don't think that's unusual. If you go to the poorest neighborhoods, you'll see glass bottles in the window that kids are saving. It's as we get older that we lose the ability to see things."
I trace my fascination with glass to my childhood as well and visits to the open house days at the University where I was entranced by the magical art of scientific glass blowing. It amazed me how they could turn the material of tiny little particles of silica (sand) into something so far removed from its natural shape.
Chihuly was also inspired by antique first peoples woven blankets and also baskets. I loved the patchwork display of these in the installation.
I think that young lad and I had a similar experience staring up at the ceiling of wonder.
Speaking of art, I noticed a distinct similarity between NEODYMIUM REEDS ON LOGS ( the purple glass on the birch logs) and my yummy desert later on that day.

Several years ago, Chihuly had a show here in Miami at the Fairchild botanical garden. It was truly beautiful. It took my breath away.

this artist managed to make such organic pieces, they all make me think of something (or someone) natural. The blankets also were such beauties, I wish I could have seen them closer ! (well, for real, I mean) I'm so happy you got to attend this exhibit. Thanks so much for sharing these colorful & very interesting photos with us. The dessert was very interesting too ...... ;-)

I went to an exhibition of his work at the Australian National Gallery once and it blew me away. It was one of the most exciting exhibitions I have ever seen. These pictures do capture the magic :)

It looks like the perfect way to spend part of your birthday weekend. I saw an exhibition of his work at Kew gardens and it was good. I think it's particuarly nice that the artists inspirations have been included in the exhibition. I don't often see that in exhibitions. It must have been a special exhibition for you. The ceiling looks particuarly fun!

My hubby's bday was Sunday and we spent a day at ANOTHER Boston museum, the ICA - wish we'd crossed paths :) I love Chihuly. I was born in Seattle and he came to speak at RISD when I was a freshman. My teacher let me leave class to go only because of where I was born (one other guy got out as well - a more recent Seattle native). I love his work and have always felt a connection with it - though since it's so organic and seems so much at home with nature I suppose we all have an innate relationship with his work :)

I just finished a weekend, learning Ravenstail Weaving, and I can tell you that those geometric patterns look deceptively easy to replicate. They are extremely sophistocated and complex. I saw this exhibit 3-4 years ago in San Francisco. I remember feeling as if I was swept up in a dream as I drifted through the gallery. My children, 2 and 5 at the time, were just as mesmerized and still talk about it whenever we go to the De Young!
