it is a longstanding tradition in my family
to
at the stoke of midnight on new year's eve
to open up the front door and back door of
the house to let the new year in
and
the old year out
then to light some sparklers and make some joyful loud noises
this year we had to be careful not to let the little kitten escape
or wake up lili
but after a delicious meal cooked by matthew and rebekah
slight changes in the routine (like not naking olie bollen)
were fine with me
on new years day I went for a hike in the beautiful snow covered valley
with old friends
it was perfect
how did you spend your first day of 2013

What a wonderful day for a hike. I got out for a run and did some catching up. L

There's always something to learn here - I had to look up olie bollen! Thank you, Margie, for sharing your traditions. We feasted on roast pork, sauer kraut, mashed potatoes and dumplings - a Pennsylvania tradition for luck in the new year. Wishing you all a Happy Healthy New Year!

I love your tradition of letting the old year out and the new year in! The Oliebollen sounds pretty yummy. ;) Have a wonderful 2013.

We hiked in Ecola park on the north Oregon coast looking for more whales. The day before we saw so many Gray whales passing through on their journey to warmer calving waters. We saw them spouting and even one tail!
On New Year's Day we ate Black-eyed peas- a tradition form my mother. Thank you for sharing your family, I agree they are the most precious things in our lives.

I didn't make it to midnight, but I did get out New Year's Day on the snowshoes. Then I did some sewing. It was the best day!
I love your tradition with the doors and the sparklers!
