the dress that oma made
not exactly what i had envisioned in my head
but i know what to do to next time
i did discover that the kitty cats are far more tolerant of kerchiefs than this busy little girl
i can't wait to see what she fills her many pockets with when we start exploring
the garden, the park and the forest this spring
...
many of you have inquired about the tipi and canoe
they were handmade by oma ( me) with help from my daughter Rebekah
she designed the pattern based on some traditional scandinavian designs
( she is moving to Norway in a few weeks)
and then painted it onto a semicircle cut from a painter's dropcloth
with textile paint, mixed by her, in a shade of dark indigo blue
the canoe was fashioned out of a large piece of brown industrial thickness felt that arounna gave me a few years ago
the shape and design was loosely based on traditional birch bark canoes
the other materials were leather scraps ( again from arounna) , hemp twine and pine moulding
:)

No wonder why you've been asked about the teepee & canoe ! They're both out of this world !! They made of L's 1st birthday a memorable one !

Such beautiful gifts you made for your lovely grand daughter. She is such a lucky little girl! Thanks for explaining a little about the canoe- my 9 year old daughter is very inspired by it and we were wondering if you could explain a little more about how you made it? I am pondering whether I could make a quilted one to approximate the thick felt you describe. hmm- do you think this would work? How did you attach the wood at the top? Hope you dont mind me asking. The thought of making something so three dimensional out of fabric really excites me. Your blog is so inspiring in its aesthetic and ethos thank you so much!

This is the best birthday scene ever! I know you and Lilith will spend countless hours of fun in the tipi and canoe too. I really love that you and Rebekha designed and created every inch of them, you must have really enjoyed the project together. Beautiful.

Margie, you are a creative powerhouse! When I saw the pictures from the party preparation and then the party I just knew you had made these wonderful gifts for Lilith and am awed by the obvious love of hand making for the ones you love. I know Lilith will have many fun adventures sailing into her imagination in her canoe and playing in her tepee. I wish there was an adult version of her pinafore, I would so wear one.

Awk, you are the most AMAZING Oma. A tipi and a canoe... Handmade!!! Fabulous fun and imaginative toys. Let us know what ends up in those pockets. :) I had to laugh about the scarf not staying on.
