as you can imagine we are having an amazing time but i just wanted to pop in and share a few images from the closing reception of the winged migration show and also the fabulous workshop at bookhou. I am almost certain that we will be able to convince geninne to visit again but maybe not during the hottest day on record in toronto.
if you are in the area please stop by to meet some fine feathered friends tonight at the closing party of winged migration. Geninne arrived last night and we want to continue to give her a warm welcome:)
I was happy to check in with my fine feathered friends on Sunday morning at bookhou when I delivered a little pile of naturally dyed crochet covered stones. They are doing really well and If you are in the toronto area the show will be up for another two weeks. In fact you are all invited to the closing party on the 22nd of July from 7 to 9 pm where you will have a chance to meet geninne, arounna, myself and my friend sonia who will be visiting from france.
The bookhou team did an super amazing job on bah issue 03 , the summer issue. I am so honoured to be one of the three new contributors to this issue. After my early morning preview ( and i mean early) I later emailed arounna that it was it was bright , warm and drop dead gorgeous, just like summers in Ontario.
and now since the delicious pie has been published I can show you this photo of abigail brown's birdies preferring to eat pie instead of being baked in one.
I have been asked by a few how they can view the birdies without going to the show. At least I can start with some pictures of my contributions. Some of these are sold already:) but I am not exactly sure which ones.
Those are the handstitched, natural dyed, rusty blackbird, acadian flycatcher, cerulean warbler and gold winged warbler, in order of appearance.
Next are the collaborative pieces geninne and I worked on when I visited her in Mexico. Each stone was painted by geninne and then a nest was crocheted and woven by me. I put them in jars filled with different natural materials.
It is so hard to photograph things in glass.
As I was preparing for the show last week a little friend of mine was spotted trying to make a winged statement.
Sort of fell off the colour week postings with the prom on tuesday and graduation last evening. My husband and I celebrated the last of our four children graduating from high school, all ontario scholars and all wonderful. We did a little too much celebrating because before we knew it we had both slept through our normal early arise times.
It is good to know that there are other night birds out last night at bookhou.
photograph by arounna , hand drawn and cut decals by me
seeing this night scene has made me want to make a canadian owl of some sort with my natural dyed fabrics and stitching. Perhaps just the sort of relaxing project I need for the weekend. Hoping to head to the water for at least a day trip.
Promised I would share a few pictures I took when I had a very short visit with arounna at bookhou on friday. I love how she lives with her family above the shop and studio. I got a very lovely peak at the third floor loft they are creating with so much wonderful natural light.
There are two shows on at bookhou now. One in the front of the shop and one in the back closer to where all the sewing magic happens. You can read about the artists on the bookhou website. I can't believe the next show up in this, one of my favorite places will be my very first show to curate. Which was really the reason I happened to be in Toronto that day. I was buying frames for the drop dead gorgeous original paintings by Geninne. I carefully carried them home with me aboard the plane when I returned from mexico.
The weather here has been just fantastic after the long day of rain on saturday. It is perfect for hanging out in the garden and then rehydrating and relaxing on the porch.
i am a little bird obsessed these days working on my pieces for the winged migration show at bookhou at the end of the month. I went down to Toronto to pick up some shadow boxes that I am going to use to display these hand stitched feathered friends. I had a little visit with arounna, john and piper. Got to see the show up at bookhou now. There are actually two shows since with the washi paper pieces. Everything looked amazing. I will show you a few pics tomorrow.
Okay I will just show you one, lil p and her adorable hair sculpture:)
