The Ojibwa tell a story of the moccasin flower, known also as the pink lady's slipper. A young girl sets out in
deep winter to get the healing herbs mash-ki- ki to save the
sick in her village. She walks all night and is
caught in drifted snow. The snow whispers, "Be wise!" and she figures
out, like the fox, how to free herself. But her rabbit fur-lined moccasins are
left behind. She continues back to her village her feet frozen and bleeding from the snow and ice. In the spring, when she returns to look for her moccasins, she
finds pink flowers in the shape of moccasins have grown where her blood touched the ground.
i think i see the brave little girl who saved her village
Similar to the jack in the pulpit plant if any part is picked, the entire
flower dies. It is also very difficult to transplant since it has a very special symbiotic relationship with a rhizoctonia fungus and cannot continue to live without it. Under the perfect conditions the flower lives about 20 years. a
A proboscis is an elongated feeding tube attached to the head of an animal. The most well known example of a proboscis in insects is the feeding tube used by adult butterflies and moths. The proboscis is a tube made by the elongated maxillae of the butterfly, these are u-shaped and held together with hooks to form a tube.
