Before the raid:
After the raid that happened in between soccer games yesterday:
I am almost certain it was the "brown squirrel gang" . Were they thinking it was crystal meth nuts?? Or perhaps they were just looking for color inspiration to redecorate their nests. I would be pleased to help them if they promised not to live in my attic ever again.
What a delicious high fiber sandwich it makes.
The materials used for dyeing from top to bottom were:
sambucus canadensis
viburnum lantana
vitis riparia
rhus typhina
crataegus pediculate
buddleia
tanacetum vulgare and orange mycena
frangula alnus
caulophyllum thalietroides
coffee arabica
mystery bush ( the squirrels stole the label and I can't recall what it was)
mystery solved thanks to Andrea's suggestion
it was cornus stolonifera ( a dogwood species) ( no idea how I could have forgotten that:)
There you have my amateurish musings on natural dyeing on a sunday morning.

This looks like so much fun, I will have to try it sometime. (We have one of those gangs too, as well as the nighttime raiding possum gang!)

Sneaky squirrels!
I love the photos of the dye on the table cloth. Unexpectedly beautiful.

There is humor in this story - although I'm sure it was upsetting to see everything disrupted when you returned home. Love the subtle colors you produced. I await it's transformation into whatever it is you have in mind!

The felt is so beautiful! I'm sure the project wouldn't have been as successful without the help of the squirrels.

Can you read the label in the full sized version of one of your "before" photographs?

What a pretty stack of felt. No wonder the squirrels went nuts.

Oh, I love how the Viburnum gave a nice red. I also use plants and berries to dye. I post my results at treepeeps.com. Here is a link to my berry dye trials: http://makinganddoing.blogspot.com/2010/09/berry-dyes.html.
I love your blog :)
