winter fungi

i walked on water today

frozen pond water 

and discovered 

winter fungi

of the schizophyllaceae sort

somewhere in the evolutionary

tree between a polypore and a gilled mushroom

or so the mycologists say

the hint of salmon pink against the dark brown wet wood

was so beautiful

natural ice sculptures

i love that last one

fresh air and exercise

so the hot indian food didn't work

so onto fresh air and exercise

and 

a little snow man making

i told mom 

that as long as she can still tie her own boots

and has a big smile on her face

that 

baby might just not want to come out

it is so cold even the snowflakes are wearing sweaters

the other day it was snowing big fluffy flakes but when i went outside

to take a closer look at the individual snowflakes they looked furry

like they had been dressed in their handknit woolen sweaters

the mittens with a message

time for another mitten monday 

 remember the unfinished mittens on the far left

they have a  message to share today

as promised

knit using the selbu mitten pattern in the book Folk Mittens

and the lovely briggs and little wool from new brunswick

the reverse side reveals a secret

alas the left mitten doesn't have a thumb hole

the story goes that these were knit over 10 years ago

at the hospital bedside of a family member that was in 

a terrible accident with life threatening injuries

i didn't leave the hospital for almost a week

a great many of my worries and concerns were

knit into those mittens

the loved one had a complete recovery

the mittens were never finished 

and it wasn't until they resurfaced when I was looking for my mittens

to photograph that i realized 

just how special they were

i am going to frame them 

as a reminder

of how precious 

life 

is

soft, airfilled, layers, perfect crystals, and beautiful imperfection too, able to be gently blown or swept away, sparkle, glisten, enchanting, magic
