cooling off with lili

it is the warmest summer so far

and we find lots of fun ways to stay cool

lili and i gathered only edible flowers and leaves from the garden

filled up a vintage enameled wash basin with water 

and then had fun spashing about

we spent the entire evening outside in the back yard 

Lili got to meet Kevin ( Deborah's bf) again:)

I guesss you can see why we only picked edible flowers 

Lili can sit quite well now

she can say all her vowels

and when she says ahhhhhh

you would swear she was singing

she loves deborah's floral bikini hanging on the line

you have seen a bee and a fly

but have you ever seen a bee-fly or more specifically Bombylius major

I have been spending quite a bit of time out working on our garden

on friday I was admiring the layers of brown eyed susans in full bloom

when a furry little flying creature came into the view of my lens

It looked like a bee but it wasn't a bee

it looked like a fly but it wasn't a fly

it had a very long proboscis similar to those of butterflies and moths

It was a very cooperative model for me 

and then it flew away and hasn't been seen since

edgar had no idea what the fuss was about

isn't it ironic

that on saturday I was hiking and swimming in gatineau park at Meech Lake, the place where Prime Minister Stephen Harper has his summer home. There I was enjoying the natural beauty of the lush forest trail with nicole and my daughter rebekah.  The irony is that tomorrow rebekah and hundreds of scientists will hold a protest , a funeral march from the convention center where over 2400 biologists are holding a conference on evolution and ecology to parliament hill. The protest has been called the Death of Evidence.

my daughter tamara never ceases to surprise me with her artistic talents

she has been taking her first pottery classes here in town

she was disappointed she would not be using a wheel straight away

but look at all the magic that came from rolling, folding, pinching and pressing

i love each and every piece so much 

can't wait to see what she creates in the fall

moths are amazingly beautiful

Last week I rescued a sphinx month the size of a small bird from certain demise at the doorsteps of the supermarket near my office. I gently moved it to the back of the plaza where the marsh is. 

I took a little walk today at lunch and say a clearwing hummingbird moth enjoying a rest on the sumac. It was so so gorgeous. 

i feel so blessed to have these close encounters with nature
