original meaning : the prevailing fashion in coiffure, jewelry, and apparel of a period, country, or class

i was reminded of this last week when I came across this old photograph of my eldest daughter tamara and one of her great aunts in Scheveningen , Netherlands. The word costume has taken on an entirely different meaning in modern culture, especially on this day. I used to have a great fascination for folkloric dress of all peoples, all over the world when I was a child. I used to sit in the library and digest these sorts of books. A wonderful woman gave me a book of dutch costume a number of years ago and I thought you would enjoy seeing a few photographs from them. I hope they make you smile.

cold wet weekend

filled with indoor activities

wet trip to the last outdoors farmers market of the season:(

did a little cutting and stitching

burned some candles for hope, light and warmth

thought a great deal about those dealing with the largest storm in history

and decided I really have nothing to complain about

It felt like summer again yesterday

but

now we are in for a cold wet week

good thing I have lots of indoor activities to keep me busy

wonky ball

i wanted to make a soft fabric ball for lili to play with

with a little jingle deeply buried inside the eco stuffing

i used indigo dyed fabric in two shades of blue

natural linen

and 

bookhou triangle print 

lili doesn't mind that it isn't exactly spherical

or that oma is not that skilled at sewing

and the crocheting continues 

a little bit here and there

the thing that we all notice when working with natural dyed materials

is that the colours always complement each other so well

it is as if they were meant to be together 

just like in the natural world

was a very lovely way to start what turned out to be a very busy weekend

i also got to see piper, liam and john

and then we went to a lovely dinner with nicole

who btw ran her first marathon yesterday :)

there is so much inspiration to be found between the walls of bookhou

i am not the only one who can't imagine a world without leaves

without trees

without the life giving oxygen they release for us into the atmosphere

without shade

without a resting spot for birds

and a hiding spot for nests

without the exposion of colour that delights us here in canada every autumn

i have such great respect for the leaf
