snowflakes on my car window
noticed as i parked my car to go for a winter walk in the forest last weekend
stay warm especially my canadian friends
the rest of the world may be experiencing unusual warms but here
we are in the midst of a little ice age

i love the colours and textures of this time of year
i just wish i had more time to enjoy them

i guess it was a marvelous afternoon for a moon dance
that being the name of this variety of poppy
i could have watched this many spotted bug for hours
as she travelled up and down each stem
until finally resting on the top of one of the green pods
i even made a little instagram video of it is you happen to be following me there

and it grows in abundance around my sister Helen's cottage near wakefield quebec
it got its name from the red cap the british soldiers wore when they fought during the american revolution
the red cap is actually an algae living atop a green fungal part
they support each others metabolism and one would not survive very well without the other
they would certainly not look as beautiful either

i love how they look like tiny red flowering trees in that last photograph

but realizing we couldn't really reach it from land
you see it at the top edge of the land in the photograph
instead we just really enjoyed the walk through lichen encrusted stones
pale grasses and peat moss bogs spotted with pitcher plants
the provincial flower of newfoundland

i spent yesterday afternoon with lili, exploring the neighbourhood
she is so much fun
we found a fallen birds nest
she discovered what awesome sounds her little boot cladden feet make on the little bridge that covers the creek at the end of our cul de sac
she just wanted to stomp back and forth stopping once or twice to look at the flowing water
and see the ducks
she made some friends of some children that were walking home from school
she pointed out that they were all wearing knapsacks

you get to wear paper thin leaves as hats and jackets
you get to practice origami yoga even when you are just a newborn
you get noticed even though you are small
you can gather in large groups in the soil of your liking
you get to change colours as you age and it only makes you more beautiful

all of these photographs were taken on my earth day walk in the forest that grows in my town
i went after work and walked slowly for about an hour
you could feel the energy of the wildflowers pushing their way through the soil and thick dry leaves towards the light
when i closed my eyes i could hear so many birds, squirrels and chipmunks
towards the end of my walk i was marveling at the number of hepatica now in bloom when i noticed a shadow pass over and then come to rest very close to me
a beautiful pair of mourning cloak butterflies came to say hello
one sat on the dry leaves and the other on a log and we chatted about the weather and other things
i think they both agreed i should do homage to them with natural dyed fabrics and embroidery
i think they are right
:)
